Insects bred for the production of processed animal protein are considered animals by EU Regulations (1069/2009). However, Council Directive (98/58/EC) concerning the protection of animals kept for purposes excludes invertebrates. Currently, no piece of legislation addresses the species-specific welfare needs of farmed insects.
